The bomb. On 15 June the IRA detonates 1,500 kg of explosive on Corporation Street — the largest peacetime explosion in Britain. A coded warning and a mass evacuation mean nobody is killed, though 200 are injured. It destroys a large part of the retail centre and, brutally, releases the money and the political will to redesign it.
