The first intercity railway. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway opens on 15 September from Liverpool Road — the first railway anywhere to run scheduled passenger services between two cities by steam alone. On the opening day the MP William Huskisson steps into the path of Rocket and is killed. The station survives and is the oldest in the world.
